ISSI Award Recipients

The ISSI Awards recognize emerging leaders, mid-career researchers, and distinguished world leaders in solid-state ionics.

Announcing the Winners of the ISSI Awards !

The ISSI believes in the importance of recognizing emerging leaders in the field of solid state ionics as well as those individuals at the mid-career and senior scientist levels. Toward this goal, the Society has developed an awards program which recognizes these individuals and their seminal works. The ISSI Young Scientist Award (YSA) was first awarded in 2005 to recognize the outstanding contributions made by young scientists to solid state ionics and encouraging them to continue their fine work well into the future. In 2016 the ISSI Mid-Career Researcher Award was added to the awards program.

ISSI Mid-Career Researcher Award Recipients .

The International Society for Solid State Ionics (ISSI) is proud to announce that Prof. Shirley Meng from the University of Chicago and Prof. Naoaki Yabuuchi from Yokohama National University have been selected as the 2025 and 2026 recipients of the ISSI Mid-Career Researcher Award. Both will be honored at the 25th Meeting of the International Society of Solid-State Ionics in Singapore, July 5-10th, 2026.
The Society would like to congratulate all MCRA nominees, as we received an unprecedented number of outstanding applications, a clear reflection of the vibrancy, innovation, and pursuit of excellence currently defining the field of solid-state ionics.
Mid-Career Researcher Award

About the Recipients ...

University of Chicago

Prof. Shirley Meng is recognized for her groundbreaking work on battery materials from fundamental to applied aspects. She achieved remarkable results in the development of cathodes, anodes and electrolytes not only for conventional liquid electrolyte batteries but also for all-solid-state batteries, […]

Yokohama National University

Prof. Naoaki Yabuuchi’s research covers a broad range within the field of solid-state ionics, mainly focusing on battery materials. He develops novel battery materials through creative and original approaches based on a crystallographic perspective, targeting Li/Na battery cathodes in various material […]

Recognition and Presentation

The MRCA awards will be conferred in a special MRCA award session during the upcoming ISSI Meeting in Singapore in July, 2026, where both Prof. Meng and Prof. Yabuuchi will be present to deliver their MCRA award keynote lectures.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all the applicants. The number and quality of submissions this year demonstrate a bright and energetic future for our scientific community.
